powerful cause… The Joyful Heart Foundation is an organization started by Mariska Hargitay with a tough purpose of empowering and supporting survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. It’s a difficult subject to embrace. The invitation to this event, held in Hawaii, needed to visually encompass the idea of empowerment but also of optimism. This invitation was silkscreened in white and orange on a mirrored reflective paper. The level of visual depth we achieve here is definitely powerful and the bright orange brought a beautiful pop of joyful color. The invite was delivered in a tangerine orange envelope (I mean, how can opening your mailbox and seeing this vibrant orange envelope inside not brighten your day?)

reason to celebrate… 2010 marks 50 years of the greatest sports and entertainment franchise in the world. We worked with the team to create a fête-worthy menu for the suite holders at Cowboys Stadium. An embossed and holographic foil-stamped cover start it off with a sophisticated bang. ever vigilant, ever true. What if we told you the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. — a shop that stocks all the wares a modern superhero would need, from capes to jugs of invisibility power — was actually a front. Yes, you heard it right. Behind the incredibly cheeky writing and ingeniously industrial package design lies something far bigger than the store itself — the 826 program, a series of non-profit after-school creative writing centers for students, ages 6–18, organized by Dave Eggers. The “storefront” concept extends across a few genres, each with its own concisely-executed tounge-in-cheek brand.

posh promo… For this mailer for Neiman Marcus’ Seasonal Private Offer we took inspiration from the haute couture fall fashion trends. We designed this promo using large iconic photographs of the trends textures. The luxurious details bring a richness and warmth to this piece and elevate the aesthetic value of the offers.

save the date, 40th Birthday Party

celebrating 40 years… We were honored when asked to design an invitation package for the 40th birthday of a close friend and client of ours. When we were starting to talk about the project with her, she sent over a few pictures of the place setting being put together by the talented event planner, Tom Addis (image after the jump). This is what spurred our creative thinking and the direction for this save the date.

Inspiration, the table cloth features the prominent layered circular shape in a metallic champaign fabric and the fierce animal print desert place setting.

The save the date is delivered in a metallic champaign baronial flap envelope with the return address delicately foil stamped along the top of the flap. The envelope is finished off with a circular matte gold seal. The save the date plays off the circular shapes with a unique circular die-cut. The front of the white letterpress sheet features a deep impression metallic gold foil stamp describing the key information for the party. On the reverse, we pick up the animal print elements from the desert plate setting in the metallic gold foil.

soothing style…This is the second house completed by the studio, completely different from the first one and entirely different from Judy Aldridge’s home which we will post very soon. This is part one of two of the Stalcup’s interior. If you would like to read more about the details visit the style/SWOON post here. Once we completed the living/dining area inside she asked us to tackle her outdoor living. Stay tuned.

Easy breakfast eating area, we made new slip covers for the chairs but kept her existing table and this is an old stool she had. I really quickly dry brushed it with gray and covered in burlap to give it a new life in this space. We loved the way it turned out.

outlook/lookout. Just completed – The Fall 2010 Lookbook for Neiman Marcus. 100+ pages of the jaw droppingly gorgeous trends and upcoming moments in fashion for fall. Military is a big emphasis hence the spiral notebook-like binding. Green hues from olive to emerald are going to be a strong palette for the season — thus the inspiration for the the cover paper (a muted but still rich green). The sheet has a subtle texture to it that evokes fall outerwear somewhat like wool. It’s adorned with a deep hit from a delicious matte cappuccino-brown foilstamp. Happy shopping!

chair for Dwell with Dignity

oh, chairs…We love chairs and were excited when we were asked by ON magazine to participate in “1×3″ to redo an Aidan Gray chair for Dwell with Dignity. There are three designers recreating chairs to be auctioned off at their one year celebration. Visit style/SWOON for more information. Additional images below by Molly Dickson.

Just a little background behind our chair: A clean slate our the underlying inspiration.

Thus we chose the white glossy vinyl to cover the seat and painted the chair white. When I think of Dwell with Dignity I think about people who are hopeful and looking to start fresh. They aren’t perfect, as no one is (thus the distressing of the frame of the chair) but I feel like this is a point in their lives where they have a golden opportunity to start over (thus the back of the chair is painted gold…not shown in the photos) and the feathers are all about a fresh start. We researched symbols and tried to pair them with current design trends. In dreams feathers mean travel or the ability to move more freely in life. White feathers in dreams indicate innocence or a fresh start in a spiritual sense. I loved that. And to me, the flock of them feels like the many, many people that come together to be a part of helping these individuals get back on their feet again.

we are thrilled… to announce our first online auction site. reFINEstyle is an online marketplace of new and used luxury and designer clothing. We were thrilled to get to work on this project as it was an area we had yet to explore in interactive design. See below for more details of the design.

On the design side, this is a full service e-commerce and auction site with great product features and some incredible back-end functionality. The goal for the seller is to make it easy to list and enhancing the product details and search options which allows the buyer to an elevated shopping experience. In creating the solutions for the design we examined several online retailers as well as auction sites to create the best of both worlds that mirror the overall experience of buying from a high-end retailer.
