We embraced the mansion’s Georgian architecture and the simplicity and honesty of American colonial design and then layered in pieces inspired by the mansion’s namesake owner, Alfred Vanderbilt.
The ground floor spaces were concepted to serve as Newport’s living room, with a cozy but chic restaurant; a cool library lounge; an elegantly quirky parlor; and a dreamy, verdant conservatory, all seamlessly flowing into each other for gathering and entertaining.
The project has an urbane, cinematic feel, with walls saturated in a rich palette of muted greens, blues, and ochre and rooms filled with an artful mix of found objects, iconic vintage pieces, sculptural custom furnishings, hand-drawn wallcoverings, and classic patterns rendered in unexpected ways. The property also features a series of commissioned photographs by artist Maxine Helfman inspired by old-world still life portraits.
